Dec. 19, 2006

CLINTON, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s basketball team never trailed on Tuesday night as the Quakers defeated St. Mary-of-the-Woods College 69-48 at the old Clinton High School Gym.

Junior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/ J.W. Sexton) led the Quakers with 16 points by making 6-of-11 from the field and all four of her free throws. “Whitney had a real solid game for us,” Earlham Head Coach Liana Coutts said.

First-year Starr Gary (Indianapolis, IN/ Northwest) added 10 points, while the Quakers had seven other players in the scoring column. “It was a nice team win and everybody was able to have an opportunity to get some playing time,” Coutts said.

Earlham dominated in rebounding with a 50-25 advantage. “We did a really nice job on the boards,” Coutts said.

Sophomore Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/ Franklin County) led Earlham with eight rebounds with junior Lisa Vanderkolk (Bluffton, IN/ Bluffton) and senior Casie Byrd (Bloomington, IN/ North) pulling down seven each. Sophomore Tracy Hill (Copley, OH/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian) grabbed six rebounds.

Another area of success was at the charity stripe. “We shot the ball well from the free-throw line,” Coutts said of her squad’s 21-of-25 performance. “For us, that’s outstanding.”

The Quakers started with a small lead and eventually built a 34-20 edge by intermission.

In the second half, Earlham was never challenged and had its largest lead of 67-38 with 4:07 remaining.

Earlham (2-8) entertains Bluffton University on Thursday. The non-conference contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center begins at 3 p.m. Box Score.
