RICHMOND, Ind. — Anderson University’s seven-point run early in the second half proved to be too much for the Earlham College women’s basketball team Saturday afternoon as the Quakers fell 60-52 on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
Earlham led 28-26 at intermission and scored the initial basket of the second to lead by four points. Over the next three minutes, however, Anderson scored seven straight points to go in front for good 33-30 with 17:20 remaining. “We were cold on our shots and they did a nice job of pounding the ball inside,” Earlham Head Coach Liana Coutts said.
Anderson (7-5) eventually built a 10-point advantage in the second period and the Quakers could get no closer than 57-52 with 2:51 left. “There are a lot of positives and we do a lot of things correct,” Coutts said. “We just have to work on putting a whole game together.”
The Quakers led most of the opening stanza holding an 18-11 advantage at the 9:28 mark and then 20-13 with 8:15 on the clock. The Ravens rallied to tie the game 22-22 with 3:37 in the half, but Earlham was able to hold on to lead by two points at halftime.
Sophomore forward Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) led the Quakers with 16 points, while pulling down seven rebounds. First-year Shontavia Davis (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) tossed in 11 points, grabbed four rebounds and had three assists.
Junior Lisa Vanderkolk (Bluffton, IN/Bluffton) led Earlham with 11 rebounds and three blocks
The Quakers (2-10) visit Allegheny College on Friday, Jan. 5. The North Coast Athletic Conference contest starts at 6 p.m. Box Score.
