Hiram Defeats Quakers in NCAC Contest

RICHMOND, Ind. — Earlham College senior Whitney McBurrows scored 22 points for the women’s basketball team on Friday, but it wasn’t enough as the Quakers fell 70-58 to Hiram College on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) made eight of 14 shots with a 3-pointer in the North Coast Athletic Conference contest. She also made five out of seven from the free throw line.
Sophomore Shontavia Davis (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) added 11 points and eight rebounds, while senior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) tossed in nine points.
Sophomore Katy Buda (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) scored eight points with junior Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) finishing with six points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Quakers jumped out to an early advantage with a pair of four point leads with the last coming at 9-5 at the 15:59 mark.
Later in the first half, the game was tied 22-22 with 3:45 remaining in the opening stanza before Hiram held a 31-27 lead at intermission.
In the second period, Hiram (3-8, 1-2) built a double-digit lead before the Quakers rallied to close the gap to 55-50 with 5:20 left in the game. From the point Hiram went on a 15-8 run to end the contest.
Earlham (2-9, 1-2) faces Allegheny College at home on Saturday. The NCAC game starts at 2 p.m. Box score.
