Quakers Fall to Allegheny in Close NCAC Contest

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s basketball team gave up six straight points in the final two minutes Saturday afternoon as the Quakers dropped a 71-67 contest to Allegheny College on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
Earlham led 67-65 after senior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) nailed a 3-pointer with 1:59 remaining in the North Coast Athletic Conference game. However, from that point Allegheny (5-8, 2-2) scored six points on four consecutive possessions to put the game away.
Junior Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) led the Quakers with 19 points, while senior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) added 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Lurie finished with 13 points with sophomore Katy Buda (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) tossing in nine points. Sophomore Shontavia Davis (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) scored eight points.
Both teams had small leads in the first half as the period ended in a 37-37 tie.
In the second half, the game was tied for the eighth time at 43-43 with 16:47 remaining. Allegheny took advantage of some opportunities to take control of the contest for a few minutes. The Gators worked their way to 64-55 advantage at the 8:30 mark before the Quakers rallied eventually taking the lead on Lurie’s shot.
The Quakers (2-10, 1-3) return to action at Wittenberg University on Wednesday. The NCAC contest is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Box score.
