SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — A slow start set the tone for the Earlham College women’s basketball team on Wednesday night as the Quakers fell 78-62 to Wittenberg University.
Earlham scored the first point of the North Coast Athletic Conference contest and led 3-2 before the Tigers (5-5, 4-0) scored 11 straight points to build a 14-3 advantage with 10:21 left in the opening half.
Sophomore Katy Buda (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) nailed a 3-pointer for Earlham to make it 14-6 at the 9:33 mark. Unfortunately for the Quakers, they had just five more points the rest of the period as the Tigers led 32-11 at intermission.
In the second half, the Quakers would score 51 points, but could only get a close as 15 on three occasions with the last coming on a 3-pointer by sophomore Shontavia Davis (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central), which made it 68-53 at 5:22.
Davis led the Quakers with 16 points and nine rebounds, while senior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) added 14 points with six rebounds.
Senior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) finished with 11 points, five assists and three rebounds. Buda and sophomore Jayana Sims (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) tossed in eight points each.
The Quakers (2-11, 1-4) visit Kenyon College on Saturday. The NCAC contest is at 1 p.m. Box score.
