Late 3-Pointers Hurt Quakers
For Immediate Release:
Jan. 26, 2008
WOOSTER, Ohio — A series of crucial 3-pointers was the difference for the Earlham College women’s basketball team on Saturday as the College of Wooster defeated the Quakers 57-54 in overtime.
Earlham had led the entire time during the North Coast Athletic Conference contest when Wooster junior Meredith Wilson nailed the first of her critical 3-pointers to tie the game at 47-47 with no time on the clock in regulation.
Wilson hit another trey for the initial score in the extra session to give the Scots (6-10, 3-4) their first lead at 50-47. As the overtime period progressed, both teams had small leads before Earlham junior Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) drilled a 3-pointer and tied the game at 54-54 with 30 seconds left.
At that point, it was Wilson who hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds remaining to hand the Quakers their second overtime loss of the season. Kalamazoo beat Earlham 84-77 in Richmond on December 17.
Merrill led the Quakers with season-high totals of 20 points and 10 rebounds. It was the first double-double of the season for Merrill and sixth of her career.
Senior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) tossed in 16 points, while classmate Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) added seven points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Junior Tracy Hill (Copley, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) scored six points and pulled down nine rebounds with sophomore Jayana Sims (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) contributing three points and seven rebounds.
The Quakers (2-15, 1-8) return to action on Monday at Anderson University. The non-conference contest, which was postponed last month due to poor weather conditions, gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
