For Immediate Release:
Jan. 28, 2008
ANDERSON, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s basketball team faced Anderson University in a non-conference game on Monday and fell to the Ravens 69-42.
Originally scheduled in December, the game was postponed at that time due to poor weather conditions.
On Monday, senior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) led the Quakers with 19 points, while sophomore Jayana Sims (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) tossed in 11 points and handed out five assists.
Junior Tracy Hill (Copley, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) was one off her career best rebound total as she topped the Quakers with 13. Hill had 14 rebounds earlier this season against St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.
Senior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) pulled down seven rebounds. Lurie finished six rebounds with Sims grabbing five.
The Quakers missed the presence of junior Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County), who suffered a leg injury six minutes into the contest and never returned. She had a block and didn’t score.
Falling behind early, the Quakers were never able to recover. Anderson led 10-2 with 15:09 on the clock in the first half and eventually held a 29-14 advantage by intermission.
In the second half, the Ravens (12-6) opened their lead to 43-20 at the 14:13 mark before the Quakers scored 10 straight points to close the cap.
Lurie nailed a 3-pointer to make it 43-23 and then sophomore Katy Buda followed with a trey and it was 43-26. Lurie hit another shot behind the 3-point line and it was 43-29.
With 12:26 remaining, Sims completed the run by hitting one-of-two free throws to cut the deficit to 43-30. The Quakers got to within 13 points two more times the rest of the way with the last coming on a basket by Lurie with 9:03 left.
Earlham (2-16) is on the road again on Saturday as the Quakers visit Oberlin College. The North Coast Athletic Conference game gets underway at 3 p.m.
