Quakers Fall in NCAC Contest at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio — The Earlham College women’s basketball team had four players in double figures on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as the Quakers fell 70-64 to Oberlin College in a North Coast Athletic Conference game.

Junior Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) led the Quakers with 19 points, while senior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) added 17 points and seven rebounds.

Sophomore Jayana Sims (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) tossed in 13 points for Earlham with seven rebounds and four assists.

Junior Tracy Hill (Copley, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) had 10 points and led the Quakers with 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and third of her career. Senior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) finished with five points, eight rebounds and three assists.

The Quakers got off to a 9-5 start when McBurrows hit a pair of free throws with 15:57 left in the opening period. Oberlin responded and grabbed the lead 11-10 by the 14:02 mark.

Later in the first half, Earlham would trail by four points, but the Quakers eventually went back in front 22-21 on a basket by Lurie with 4:46 left. From that point, both teams at brief leads before McBurrows nailed a 3-pointer with 52 seconds remaining to give the Quakers a 27-26 advantage at intermission.

In the second half, Oberlin started with a 12-4 run to lead 38-31 with 16:20 on the clock. Over the next eight minutes, Earlham would fight its way back from the deficit to tie the contest 45-45 when Merrill hit a 3-pointer with 8:28 remaining.

Oberlin (4-15, 3-7) widened its margin to nine points to take control of the contest as the Quakers could only get to within four points twice with the last time coming at 68-64 when McBurrows hit a trey with 20 seconds left.

Earlham (2-17, 1-9) entertains Denison University on Tuesday. The NCAC contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center gets is at 7:30 p.m. Box score.
