HIRAM, Ohio — A second-half comeback highlighted the North Coast Athletic Conference victory by the Earlham College women’s basketball team on Friday as the Quakers beat Hiram College 73-64.
Trailing 43-28 after Hiram scored the first basket of the second half, the Quakers put together a 21-6 run to climb back into the contest.
Senior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) capped the rally with a basket to tie the game 49-49 with 10:44 remaining.
A few moments later, senior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) gave the Quakers the lead for good when she scored to make it 52-51 with 6:47 left in the period.
Earlham maintained a small margin the rest of the way until putting the game away with a 7-of-8 performance from the free throw line in the final minute.
Lurie led the Quakers with 18 points, while pulling down nine rebounds with a team-high four assists. Sophomore Jayana Sims (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) had 15 points with six rebounds.
McBurrows and junior Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) tossed in 14 points each. McBurrows along with junior Tracy Hill (Copley, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) topped the Quakers with 10 rebounds each. Hill finished with nine points, while Merrill had seven rebounds.
Slow start
Hiram (3-16, 1-10) jumped ahead of the Quakers early in the contest eventually leading 15-8 with 13:41 left in the opening stanza. Earlham rallied to tie at 15-15 when Sims scored at the 12:31 mark.
Unlike what happened in the second half, the Terriers were able to hold off the rally from the Quakers to build a 14-point advantage. Hiram led 40-28 at intermission to set the stage for Earlham’s successful comeback.
The Quakers (3-18, 2-10) continue their weekend road trip on Saturday with a visit to Allegheny College. The NCAC game is at 2 p.m. The contest will not be broadcast on Teamline. Box score.
