Quakers Face Regular Season NCAC Champ

For Immediate Release:
Feb. 16, 2008

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s basketball team honored its seniors on Saturday as the Quakers fell 60-46 to Kenyon College on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

Prior to the North Coast Athletic Conference contest, seniors Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) and Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton), who have been teammates since fifth grade were recognized for their contributions during the past four years.

Lurie, who suffered a serious knee injury a week ago, started the contest but played just a little over a minute. “I really wanted to play and get through it,” Lurie said. “I tried but I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep up.”

McBurrows finished with nine points. “It’s been a great four years and I’ve met a lot of good people,” she said. “The best part has been playing with Samantha. I’m proud of how everybody played against Kenyon, but we kind of ran out of gas at the end.”

Kenyon (18-6, 15-0), which had already clinched the regular season conference title, led most of the first half, but the Ladies couldn’t pull away and they were on top 26-21 at halftime.

In the second half, the Quakers continued to fight getting to within 45-40 with 5:02 left to play, but Kenyon responded by stretching its margin to double digits late in the contest. “We did a dynamite job,” Earlham Head Coach Liana Coutts said of the effort against the top squad in the NCAC. “Obviously, you have to gamble at the end and it pays off or stretches the lead a little bit. We were very competitive for the entire game.”

Junior Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) led the Quakers with 18 points. Sophomore Jayana Sims (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) added eight points, while leading the way with seven assists. Junior Tracy Hill (Copley, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) topped Earlham with 10 rebounds.

The Quakers (3-20, 2-12) visit Denison University on Wednesday. The NCAC game begins at 6 p.m. Box score.
