Win Over Wooster Puts Quakers in NCAC Tourney
For Immediate Release:
Feb. 23, 2008
RICHMOND, Ind. — Win and wait. That was all the Earlham College women’s basketball team could do on Saturday afternoon.
After the Quakers took care of the first part of the day with a 64-55 victory over the College of Wooster on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center, the waiting game ensued.
The nearly 30-minute wait was for the North Coast Athletic Conference officials to break the three-way tie for seventh place between Earlham (4-21, 3-13), Wooster (6-19, 3-13) and Hiram College (5-19, 3-13).
Through the NCAC tiebreaking procedures the Earlham victory put the Quakers in the eight-team conference tournament. Hiram received the seventh seed and Earlham was eighth. Wooster failed to qualify as a result of the loss to the Quakers.
The Quakers visit regular season NCAC champion Kenyon College (19-6, 16-0) on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, Earlham found shooting difficult early in the contest. However, in the second half it was a different story for the Quakers. “Everybody made great contributions,” Earlham Head Coach Liana Coutts said. “You really have to hand it to our players to fight through that and get going in the second half.”
In the opening period, Earlham hit 9-of-35 shots from the floor, while making just one of 13 attempts from behind the 3-point line. In the second half, the Quakers improved to 12-of-25 overall and 3-of-7 on 3-point shots.
Junior Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) led the Quakers with 20 points and 14 of those came in the second half. “When Tasha started out she wasn’t on, but she was mentally able to stay with it and get some great big buckets for us,” Coutts said.
Wooster led early in the contest before the Quakers quickly tied the game 7-7 with 15:28 left in the first half. From that point, Earlham worked its way to a 21-12 advantage with 7:04 remaining. The Scots rallied to eventually lead 25-24 at intermission.
In the second half, the game remained tight with the Quakers in front most of the way. The score was tied 41-41 with 9:15 left. Earlham was able to widen its margin from there and put the game away with 9-of-12 free throws over the last two minutes.
Sophomore Jayana Sims (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) tossed in 12 points with eight assists and seven steals for the Quakers, while senior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) added 11 points.
Junior Tracy Hill (Copley, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) led the Quakers with eight rebounds, while scoring seven points. Sophomore Kortney Corman (New Palestine, IN/New Palestine) finished with eight points. Sophomore Katy Buda (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) had six points. Box score.
