Quakers Start Season Against Franklin

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — A second half rally fell short on Friday night as the Earlham College women’s basketball team opened the season with a 70-56 loss to Franklin College in the Rose-Hulman Tip-Off Classic.
Senior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) led the Quakers with 17 points, while sophomores Shontavia Davis (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) and Jayana Sims (Indianapolis, IN/ Ben Davis) added 10 points each.
Senior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton), junior Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) and junior Tracy Hill (Copley, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) had eight rebounds each.
The Quakers fell behind early with Franklin (1-0) scoring the first nine points of the contest. The Grizzlies built a 39-23 advantage by intermission.
In the second half, the Quakers increased their intensity and fought back into the contest. Earlham went on a 20-4 run and when Davis hit a pair of free throws with 10:39 remaining in the game the score was tied 43-43.
There were two more ties before Franklin took the lead for good at 49-47 with 8:13 remaining in the contest.
Earlham (0-1) faces Rose-Hulman Saturday at 3 p.m. in the final game of the Rose-Hulman Tip-off Classic. The Engineers (0-1) lost their contest on Friday to Tri-State University 72-52. Box score.
