RICHMOND, Ind. — A big run at the end of the first half Wednesday provided the Earlham College women’s basketball team a boost as the Quakers posted a 74-61 win over St. Mary-of-the-Woods College on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

Trailing 27-20 with 6:02 left in the opening half, the Quakers scored the final 16 points in the period to lead 36-27 at intermission.

“It’s nice to play at home and move forward and grab a win,” Earlham Head Coach Liana Coutts said. “One of the areas that we need to continue to work on is playing to our level. We need to establish aggressiveness regardless of who are up against. We want to that have consistency from the beginning of the game.”

Once the Quakers found a rhythm in their home opener, they finished with five players in double figures led by 15 points from junior Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County).

During the decisive stretch, Merrill gave the Quakers the lead for good at 28-27 with a 3-pointer at the 2:31 mark of the first half.

In the second half, the Quakers widened their margin to 24 points twice with the final time coming on a trey by Merrill at 8:21.

Senior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton), junior Tracy Hill (Copley, OH/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and sophomore Shontavia Davis (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) finished with 12 points each, while sophomore Katy Buda (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) tossed in 10 points.

Senior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) added eight points.

Hill grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds and had the second double-double in her time at Earlham. Last season, she had 16 points and 10 rebounds against the College of Mount St. Joseph and 13 rebounds at Allegheny College. “Tracy Hill’s performance was outstanding,” Coutts said.

Davis ended the contest with nine rebounds and three blocks.

Sophomore Jayana Sims (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) score five points, but led the Quakers with seven assists and four steals. “Jayana did an excellent job of coming off the bench and giving us the spark that we needed,” Coutts said.

Earlham (1-4) is at Ohio Wesleyan University next Wednesday. The North Coast Athletic Conference contest is at 7:30 p.m. Box score.
