DELAWARE, Ohio — A 3-pointer was the difference on Wednesday night as the Earlham College women’s basketball team dropped a 63-61 contest at Ohio Wesleyan University.
The Quakers led by one point when Ohio Wesleyan’s Stacey Aaron drilled a trey with three seconds remaining in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Earlham’s desperation attempt by senior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) was off as the buzzer sounded.
Senior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) led the Quakers with 19 points, while junior Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) tossed in 13 points.
Junior Tracy Hill (Copley, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and sophomore Shontavia Davis (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) finished with seven points each
Davis and sophomore Jayana Sims (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) topped the Quakers with eight rebounds apiece with Hill pulling down seven. Davis added four assists and four steals, while Lurie had four assists.
The game was tight throughout the first half with seven ties before Lurie scored the final basket of the period to give the Quakers a 33-32 lead at intermission.
In the second half, Ohio Wesleyan worked its way to a 49-36 advantage with 13:16 left to play. Earlham responded with six straight points with the final score of the run coming on a 3-pointer by McBurrows at the 11:47 mark.
As the second half was coming to a close, the Quakers rallied to tie the game 57-57 with 2:15 remaining. Sims gave the Quakers a 58-57 lead with a free throw at 1:44 before the Bishops went back in front with a 3-pointer.
A few possessions later, Merrill gave the Quakers a 61-60 lead with 23 seconds left in the contest to set up the game-winner by Ohio Wesleyan (4-2, 1-0).
Earlham (1-5, 0-1) entertains Oberlin College on Saturday. The NCAC game on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center begins at 1 p.m. Box score.
