Dec. 8, 2007

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s basketball team finished with a big run Saturday afternoon as the Quakers blasted Oberlin College 76-54 on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

Earlham led 57-48 with 5:28 left in the North Coast Athletic Conference contest before finishing the game with a 19-6 run from that point.

Shooting in the second half was a major difference. “Our shots weren’t falling the first half,” Earlham Head Coach Liana Coutts said. “Oberlin was playing off of us and we kept putting the ball on the floor. They were giving us the outside shot and we weren’t recognizing that.”

That changed after intermission as the Quakers connected on 22-of-39 shots with 5-of-11 from behind the 3-point line. In the first period, Earlham was 7-of-33 from the floor and 2-of-14 in 3-point attempts.

The Quakers had four players in double figures led by a 20-point effort from sophomore Shontavia Davis (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central). Davis also topped the Quakers with 10 rebounds to record the first double-double of her career.

Senior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) and junior Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) had 19 points each, while senior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) tossed in 13 points. “It’s nice to see everybody get into the mix like that,” Coutts said. “They did a great job.”

Oberlin (1-5, 0-2) led most of the first half as the Yeowomen worked their way to a 26-22 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Earlham fought back and junior Tracy Hill (Copley, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) gave the Quakers the lead for good 31-30 at the 16:40 mark. Earlham widened the gap to double digits when McBurrows hit a jumper giving the Quakers a 44-33 lead with 11:25 left to play.

The margin stayed around 10 points until the Quakers put together their dominating stretch in the last five minutes of the contest.

Earlham (2-5, 1-1) visits Anderson University next Saturday. The non-conference game gets underway at 3 p.m. Box score.
