Kalamazoo Needs Overtime to Beat Quakers

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s basketball team fell short in overtime Monday afternoon as Kalamazoo College defeated the Quakers 84-77 on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

Senior Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) had career-high totals with 29 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Quakers, while sophomore Shontavia Davis (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) finished with 20 points and eight rebounds.

Senior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) added 10 points with junior Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) ended the day with nine points.

Sophomore Jayana Sims (Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) handed out a career-high nine assists and scored four points.

The Quakers jumped out to a 16-6 lead at the 15:06 mark of the first half. The Hornets had a run of their own and eventually built a 30-24 advantage with 4:26 remaining in the opening period. Earlham answered with six straight points to tie the game at 30-30 with 2:04 left.

At the end of the first half, sophomore Katy Buda (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) nailed her only basket of the game, which was a 3-pointer with six seconds left to send the teams into the locker room deadlocked at 35-35.

The second half mirrored the first as the Quakers were able to lead by eight points twice with the last coming at 52-44 with 12:26 remaining.

Kalamazoo later tied the game at 56-56 and then took the lead in the final moments of regulation. A twisting shot underneath the basket by Davis with four seconds left to send the game into an extra session.

Lurie hit a pair of free throws to give Earlham a 77-76 lead with 3:08 left in the overtime, but the Quakers couldn’t score after that as the Hornets put together an 8-0 run to finish the afternoon.       

Earlham (2-6) is at Heidelberg College on Wednesday. The non-conference contest starts at 7 p.m. Box score.
