Quakers Fall to Ohio Northern in Home Contest

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s basketball team ended the 2007 portion of the schedule Saturday afternoon with a 73-59 loss to Ohio Northern University on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
Senior Whitney McBurrows (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) led the Quakers with 18 points, while classmate Samantha Lurie (Lansing, MI/J.W. Sexton) and sophomore Shontavia Davis (Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) added 10 points each.
Junior Tracy Hill (Copley, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) tossed in nine points and finished with a game-high 12 rebounds. Junior Tasha Merrill (Cedar Grove, IN/Franklin County) contributed eight points.
Ohio Northern (9-2) jumped out to an early 7-0 advantage before the Quakers rallied to close the gap to 9-8 with 14:31 remaining in the first half.
After falling behind by four points, the Quakers pulled to within 16-15 at the 9:09 mark of the opening period, but by intermission the Polar Bears had built a 33-26 lead.
In the second half, Earlham stayed close and eventually cut its deficit to 45-39 when Lurie made a pair of free throws with 11:38 left in the contest. From that point, Ohio Northern kept its distance from the Quakers and held on for the victory.
Earlham (2-8) entertains North Coast Athletic Conference foe Hiram College on Jan. 4, 2008. The contest gets underway at 6 p.m.
