RICHMOND, Ind. — Community service is an integral part of athletics at Earlham College and on Saturday several field hockey players will be trading in their sticks for tools.
The team is working on a house for Habitat for Humanity just a few miles from the Earlham campus. “I had volunteered for this organization over the last few years,” Earlham Head Field Hockey coach Jill Butcher said. “It was always a rewarding and fulfilling experience. I asked our team if they were interested in volunteering and they were extremely excited about the opportunity.”
Sophomore Anna Tybinko (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown Friends) has volunteered for many organizations, but this building a home will be a new experience. “My dad, Roman, is a carpenter,” she said. “Normally, I work as a painter for him, but I’ve never built a house. That’s pretty exciting.”
Tybinko and her teammates are looking forward to the task. “It’s a different way building camaraderie within the team,” she said. “Most importantly, we are helping create a new home for someone."
