For Immediate Release
Oct. 10, 2006
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Earlham College field hockey dropped a 4-2 decision Tuesday to North Coast Athletic Conference foe Wittenberg University.
Earlham trailed 2-0 in the first half when junior Liz Buehler (Hartland, WI/Arrowhead) scored on a penalty stroke at 21:27 to close the gap by intermission. “We got off to a slow start,” Earlham Head Coach Jill Butcher said. “We just are not used to playing on turf. It’s definitely a faster game.”
Wittenberg added a pair of goals in the second period before Earlham first-year Cassie Gage (West Carrollton, OH/Fairmont) put the final tally on the board at 68:13.
Butcher also praised the play of junior Anna Benfield (Takoma Park, MD/Montgomery Blair). “Anna played a great field game for us,” she said.
Sophomore goalkeeper Katherine McDonough (Louisville, KY/St. Francis) had 12 saves for the Quakers. Wittenberg outshot the Quakers 23-6 and had an 8-4 edge in penalty corners.
The Quakers (2-10, 0-8) entertain Oberlin College on Saturday as part of Earlham’s Homecoming celebration. The NCAC match starts at 11 a.m. Box Score.
