Oct. 24, 2006
GRANVILLE, Ohio — A pair of late goals made the difference on Tuesday as the Earlham College field hockey team was defeated by Denison University 4-2 in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest.
The score was tied at 2-2 when the Quakers took an aggressive approach for the victory. “We were pushing up the field and trying to score,” Earlham Head Coach Jill Butcher said.
The end result, however, was that Denison scored twice in the final five minutes to put the game away.
Senior Becca Jordan (Montpelier, VT/Montpelier) gave the Quakers an early lead at the 10:20 mark. First-year Nicole VanScyoc (Kettering, OH/Fairmont) assisted on the play, which came off a penalty corner.
Denison (6-10, 5-6) scored two times in the first half including once in the final minute to lead 2-1 at intermission.
Earlham eventually tied the match at 2-2 with a goal by VanScyoc at 62:17. Junior Liz Buehler (Hartland, WI/Arrowhead) picked up the assist as the Quakers scored on another penalty corner.
Junior Anna Benfield (Takoma Park, MD/Montgomery Blair) had nine saves for the Quakers. She was in goal for Earlham for the first time since early last season in place of sophomore goalkeeper Katherine McDonough (Louisville, KY/St. Francis), who was ill.
Earlham outshot Denison 18-16 and had a 10-7 edge in penalty corners.
The Quakers (2-14, 0-11) finish the season at Oberlin College on Saturday. The NCAC match starts at 11 a.m. Box Score.
