For Immediate Release:
Sept. 1, 2007

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Earlham College field hockey team opened its season on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Transylvania University.

Earlham fell behind early after Transylvania scored on a penalty stroke, but the Quakers responded. Sophomore Cassie Gage (West Carrollton, OH/Kettering Fairmont) scored three times with classmate Nicole Van Skyoc (Kettering, OH/Kettering Fairmont) assisting on the first goal.

“I’m extremely pleased,” Earlham Head Coach Jill Butcher said. “We passed the ball and did a great job of supporting each other in the midfield. We played as a team and that was a key.”

The Quakers had a 16-10 edge in shots, while leading 13-6 in penalty corners.

Junior Katherine McDonough (Louisville, KY/St. Francis) had seven saves for the Quakers.

Earlham (1-0) stays on the road for its next match at Kenyon College next Friday at 4:30 p.m. Box score.
