Carter ties school mark as Quakers win
September
27, 2005
RICHMOND, Ind. —
First-year Hillary Carter tied a school record on Tuesday with four goals in
a match, as the Earlham College women's soccer team blanked Anderson University
4-0 on Matlack Field.
It was the third straight shutout for
the Quakers (6-2-1) who have put together three wins in a row and
six consecutive games without a
loss. The only blemish
during the span is a 1-1 tie at Manchester College on Sept. 17.
Carter (Middletown,
OH/Lakota East) got started
at the 21:28 mark of the first half with a goal on an assist from
Ashley Reyer. The second score came after Carter was pulled down
from
behind as she was ready to challenge Anderson's goalie Kelsey Alcorn. Carter's
attempt
on the penalty kick was initially stopped by Alcorn, but Carter nailed the
rebound into the net at 28:51. Carter's third and fourth goals were unassisted.
The third score gave the Quakers a 3-0 advantage at intermission.
The fourth was her 10th of the year, which
is four away from the Earlham season record for goals established in 1999 by
Shoshana
Erickson and Lacey Berns.
The four goals equals the Earlham record
that was set by Erickson in a 6-0 victory over Hiram College on
Sept. 30, 2000. It is
also the sixth time since
the program
was established in 1988 that a women' s player has put together a hat trick
(three goals in a game). The others to do it are Erickson (twice), Marina
Michahelles (twice) and Berns. Tuesday's total for Carter was also
one score off the North
Coast Athletic Conference mark of five that has stood since 1997.
The Quakers
out shot the Ravens 23-1 with a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. Earlham
senior goalkeeper Kari Wilder-Romans (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) had one save
before being relieved by first-year Natasha Kroma (Marion, IN/Marion).
Earlham begins NCAC play on Saturday
at Allegheny College. The match starts at 11 a.m. Back-to-back
