Quakers Win Season Opener at Home

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s tennis team opened the spring season Saturday afternoon with a 6-3 victory over St. Joseph’s College on the Trueblood Fieldhouse Courts in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

The Quakers posted a pair of doubles wins and four victories in singles play. “I was pleased with the performance of all of the women,” Earlham Head Coach Justin Carrier said. “It was a nice way to start the spring.”

Senior Jenn Silver (Champaign, IL/Urbana) and first-year Rachel Hawkins (Midland, MI/Herbert Henry Dow) won at No. 1 doubles for the Quakers defeating Anisha Gohil and Missy Kiefer 8-1. Earlham junior Kate Unver (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and classmate Liz Byrd (Richmond, IN/Richmond) were victorious at No. 2 doubles with an 8-4 decision over Jordan Orner and Jessica Conlin.

In singles, Hawkins beat Gohil 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (5) at No. 2. Byrd won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 over Kiefer with Unver winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 over Conlin. Junior Rachel Applefield (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover) was Earlham’s other winner at No. 6 coming back to post a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (7) victory over Heidi Friermood.

Earlham (1-0) visits Cedarville College on Tuesday, March 13. The non-conference match starts at 3:30 p.m. Scoresheet.
