Quakers Earn Win Over Manchester

For Immediate Release:
March 28, 2007

RICHMOND, Ind. — Rain forced the Earlham College women’s tennis team to play indoors Wednesday and the Quakers responded with a 5-4 victory over Manchester College on the Trueblood Fieldhouse Courts in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

The Quakers won three matches in singles and two doubles contests to beat the Spartans. “It was a really nice win for the women because Manchester beat us last fall,” Earlham Head Coach Justin Carrier said. “Manchester is consistently one of the top teams in the Heartland Conference so we played a solid match.”

Earlham junior Liz Byrd (Richmond, IN/Richmond) defeated Christa Hunter 8-2 at No. 3 singles, while classmate Kate Unver (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) won 8-3 over Jordin Youst at No. 4 singles.

Junior Claire Rivron (Bloomington, IN/South) posted Earlham’s other win in singles with an 8-5 decision over Jessica Mertz at No. 5.

At No. 1 doubles, senior Jenn Silver (Champaign, IL/Urbana) and first-year Rachel Hawkins (Midland, MI/Herbert Henry Dow) were victorious 8-6 over Milagros Ridoutt and Sarah Conwell.

Byrd and Unver teamed up to win 8-0 over Mertz and Hunter at No. 2 doubles.

Earlham (2-1) entertains Rose-Hulman Saturday. The non-conference match is at 10 a.m. Scoresheet.
