Quakers Split NCAC Matches

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Earlham College women’s tennis team split a pair of matches against North Coast Athletic Conference foes on Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

The Quakers lost 5-4 to Wittenberg University before bouncing back with a 5-4 win over the College of Wooster at the Springfield Racquet Club after midnight Saturday. The matches were moved from a morning starting time to indoors in the due to poor weather conditions.

With the Wooster match tied 4-4, first-year Rachel Hawkins (Midland, MI/Herbert Henry Dow) gave the Quakers the victory over the Scots by defeating Elissa Lauber 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

Juniors Liz Byrd (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and Kate Unver (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) also won in singles. Byrd beat Brenna Hart 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, while Unver remained undefeated in seven matches with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kimee Rankin at No. 4. 

Byrd and Unver also teamed to win 8-1 over Hart and Erin Bauer at No. 2 doubles. Earlham’s other victory was at No. 3 doubles with junior Claire Rivron (Bloomington, IN/South) and sophomore Avery Goldman (New Haven, CT/Hamden) beating Rankin and Eden Kovacik 8-6.

Against Wittenberg, Earlham won two of three doubles contests, but managed just a pair of victories in singles as the Quakers had their three-match winning streak snapped.

Senior Jenn Silver (Champaign, IL/Urbana) and Hawkins won 8-2 over Emily Nash and Cathy Hall at No. 1 doubles. Byrd and Unver picked up an 8-3 victory over Jessica Corns and Amanda Williams at No. 2 doubles.

In singles action, Hawkins beat Nash 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2, while Unver defeated Hall 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4.

The Quakers (5-2, 1-1) visit Oberlin College next Saturday. The NCAC match is at 10 a.m. Wittenberg scoresheet. Wooster scoresheet.
