Quakers Play Close Contest at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio — The Earlham College women’s tennis squad played a tight match on Saturday at Oberlin College, but came away with a 5-4 loss in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest.
The Quakers won two of the three doubles matches, but finished with just two wins in singles.
Senior Jenn Silver (Champaign, IL/Urbana) and first-year Rachel Hawkins (Midland, MI/Herbert Henry Dow) needed a tiebreaker to beat Bianca Barr and Elizabeth Anzinger 9-8 (5) at No. 1 doubles. Juniors Liz Byrd (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and Kate Unver (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) defeated Jackie Golden and Kelly Sipp 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Hawkins and Byrd were the winners for the Quakers in singles. Hawkins beat Anzinger 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while Byrd bounced back after dropping her first set to post a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-1 victory over Golden at No. 3 singles.
Earlham (6-3, 1-2) return to the courts on Tuesday at Denison University. The NCAC match begins at 4 p.m. Scoresheet.— EC —
