Feb. 15, 2008

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s tennis team opens the season on Saturday against Wilmington College on the Trueblood Courts inside the Athletics and Wellness Center.

The match is part of the annual Community Day and it begins at 1 p.m. “I know there will be a lot of people in the Athletics and Wellness Center on Saturday and we’re happy to be a small part of the day,” Earlham Tennis Coach Justin Carrier said. “I’m excited about this team, which may be the deepest I’ve had at Earlham.”

This year’s top three singles players are back from a year ago. Sophomore Rachel Hawkins (Midland, MI/Herbert Henry Dow) is expected to play at the No. 1 spot. She received North Coast Athletic Conference Honorable Mention last season with a 9-1 record at No. 2 singles and 10-1 overall.

Senior Liz Byrd (Richmond, IN/Richmond) is at No. 2 with the No. 3 position being filled by senior Kate Unver (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood). Byrd was 7-5 in singles, while Unver was 9-2. The duo will pair up as the No. 1 doubles team after competing at No. 2 last spring with a 10-2 record.

Senior Claire Rivron (Bloomington, IN/South) is also back after participating in an off-campus study program joining other returnees senior Rachel Applefield (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover), junior Avery Goldman (New Haven, CT/Hamden), and sophomore Megan Rahill (Indianapolis, IN/International).

Carrier is also expecting contributions from first-years Rebecca Ogle (Indianapolis, IN/Brebeuf), Miriam Holzman-Lipsitz (East Lansing, MI/East Lansing) and Nora Mineva Pleven, Bulgaria/Lester B. Pearson).

After Saturday’s Wilmington match, the Quakers face St. Joseph’s College (March 1), Manchester College (March 12), Ohio Wesleyan University (April 3) and Oberlin College (April 19) in home contests this spring.

The Quakers have road contests at Rose-Hulman (March 22), Indiana Tech (March 29) and at Wittenberg University (April 12). There is also a match against Aquinas at Indiana Tech.

The NCAC Tournament is set for April 25-26 at Oberlin.
