Quakers Beat Wilmington 8-1 in Season Opener

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s tennis team started its season with an 8-1 victory over Wilmington College Saturday afternoon on the Trueblood Courts inside the Athletics and Wellness Center.
The Quakers swept the six single matches and took two of three contests in doubles action. “We played well,” Earlham Tennis Coach Justin Carrier said. “Everybody came up with straight set wins in singles, which bodes well for us.”
Sophomore Rachel Hawkins (Midland, MI/Herbert Henry Dow) won 6-1, 6-0 over Jess Walt at the No. 1 singles spot. Senior Liz Byrd (Richmond, IN/Richmond) defeated Sarah Amling 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. Senior Kate Unver (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) beat Liz Amling 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3.
First-year Rebecca Ogle (Indianapolis, IN/Brebeuf) posted a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Debra Stewart, while senior Claire Rivron (Bloomington, IN/South) won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 over Erin Cane. First-year Miriam Holzman-Lipsitz (East Lansing, MI/East Lansing) beat Megan Higgins 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 position.
In doubles play, Byrd and Unver defeated Walt and Stewart 8-0 at No. 1. The other win came at No. 3 doubles when first-year Nora Mineva Pleven (Pleven, Bulgaria/Lester B. Pearson).teamed with senior Rachel Applefield (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover) to win 8-4 over Cane and Bethany Fickle.
Earlham (1-0) entertains St. Joseph’s College on Saturday, March 1. The non-conference match begins at 1 p.m. Box score.— EC —
