Quakers Win Second Straight

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s tennis team won its second match of the season Saturday with a 7-2 victory over St. Joseph’s College on the Trueblood Courts inside the Athletics and Wellness Center.
“We lost to them 5-4 last fall so this was a nice victory,” Earlham Tennis Coach Justin Carrier said. “We got off to a good start in doubles and were able to maintain our level of play in singles.”
Seniors Liz Byrd (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and Kate Unver (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) won 9-7 over Anisha Gohil and Missy Kiefer at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Rachel Hawkins (Midland, MI/Herbert Henry Dow) and senior Claire Rivron (Bloomington, IN/South) teamed up at No. 2 doubles for a 9-8 (5) victory over Jordan Orner and Jessica Conlin.
At No. 3 doubles, senior Rachel Applefield (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover) and first-year Rebecca Ogle (Indianapolis, IN/Brebeuf) defeated Angela Burgeson and Emily Theime 8-6.
The Quakers won four matches in singles with Hawkins leading the way at No.1 with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Orner.
Ogle beat Conlin 7-6 (5), 6-2 at No. 4 singles, while Rivron won 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (5) at No. 5. First-year Miriam Holzman-Lipsitz (East Lansing, MI/East Lansing) won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
Earlham (2-0) entertains Central State University on Tuesday, March 11. The non-conference contest is at 4 p.m. Scoresheet.— EC —
