March 11, 2008

RICHMOND, Ind. — The unbeaten Earlham College women’s tennis team won its third straight match Tuesday afternoon as the Quakers beat Central State University 8-1 on the Trueblood Courts inside the Athletics and Wellness Center.

“Central State is a developing program that is only a few years old,” Earlham Tennis Coach Justin Carrier said. “This match gave us a great chance to have other players get on the court.”

The Quakers won two doubles matches and picked up a victory by default in the other contest without the regular lineup.

Senior Rachel Applefield (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover) and first-year Nora Mineva (Pleven, Bulgaria/Lester B. Pearson) teamed to beat Brandy Stewart and Tiffanie Jones 8-2 at No. 1.

Sophomore Megan Rahill (Indianapolis, IN/International) and first-year Miriam Holzman-Lipsitz (East Lansing, MI/East Lansing) defeated E.J. Ofamato and Mia Mack 8-0 at No. 2.

Senior Kate Unver (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) played at No. 1 singles for the first time this season and dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Stewart, but Earlham won the rest of the matches in singles and claimed a default at No. 6.

Senior Claire Rivron (Bloomington, IN/South) won 6-0, 6-2 over Ofamato at No. 2, while Mineva posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Jones at No. 3.

At No. 4 singles, Applefield beat Mack 6-0, 6-0 and then junior Avery Goldman (New Haven, CT/Hamden) picked up the remaining win in a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Mahagony Wilson.

Earlham (3-0) entertains Manchester College on Wednesday. The non-conference match gets underway at 4 p.m. Scoresheet.
