Quakers Beat Manchester

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women’s tennis team won its fifth straight match Tuesday with 5-4 win over Manchester College on the Earlham Tennis Courts.

The five victories to begin the season is the best start in school history. “This was a great win for us,” Earlham Head Coach Justin Carrier said. “This was the tightest we’ve had all season and we came through with the victory.”

Earlham won two of the three doubles contests to hold a 2-1 advantage heading into the singles competition.
 
Sophomore Rachel Hawkins (Midland, MI/Herbert Henry Dow) and senior Claire Rivron (Bloomington, IN/South) defeated Christa Hunter and Jordin Youst 9-8 (7-2) at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, senior Rachel Applefield (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover) and first-year Rebecca Ogle (Indianapolis, IN/Brebeuf) beat Nikki Ferguson and Kessie Karg 8-2.

In singles action, senior Kate Unver (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) beat Hunter 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 3. The Quakers also got win in the last two singles spots. First-year Miriam Holzman-Lipsitz (East Lansing, MI/East Lansing) defeated Ferguson 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 at No. 5, while first-year Nora Mineva (Pleven, Bulgaria/Lester B. Pearson) blanked Sherry Smith 6-0, 6-0.

Earlham (5-0) entertains Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday. The North Coast Athletic Conference match is at 4 p.m. Scoresheet.
