For Immediate Release:
April 18, 2008
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Needing to win five singles matches in a row, the Earlham College women’s tennis team got the job done as the Quakers survived the inclement weather and a move indoors to beat the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 5-4 on Friday.
“This was an awesome win,” Earlham Tennis Coach Justin Carrier said. “To be able to get a victory after dropping all of the doubles matches and being down 4-0 was great. I’m also proud of the way the team was able to make the adjustment after moving the match indoors due to the rain. It was a long day of tennis.”
Senior Kate Unver (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood), first-year Nora Mineva (Pleven, Bulgaria/Lester B. Pearson) and first-year Miriam Holzman-Lipsitz (East Lansing, MI/East Lansing) all won singles contests indoors at the Wabash Valley Tennis Center.
Unver defeated Katy Zawadski 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3, while Mineva won 6-2, 6-3 over Betsy Marschand 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5. Holzman-Lipsitz beat Caitlin Kohli 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.
Senior Liz Byrd (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and first-year Rebecca Ogle (Indianapolis, IN/Brebeuf) won their matches at the Joy Hulbert Tennis Center before the rain force the move inside.
Byrd downed Megan Chann 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles with Ogle winning 6-0, 6-0 over Mandy Grantz at No. 4.
The Quakers (6-2) face Oberlin College on Saturday in Dayton, Ohio. The North Coast Athletic Conference match begins at 2:30 p.m. Scoresheet.— EC —
