Quakers Start Season at NCAC Relays

GRANVILLE, Ohio — A first-place finish was the top performance on Saturday as the Earlham College women’s track team participated in the North Coast Athletic Conference Relays at Denison University.
The Quakers finished fourth out of nine teams with Ohio Wesleyan University winning the meet. “I’m really excited about our finish as a team,” Earlham Head Coach Nick Johnson said. “Overall, I was really pleased with our performance. We just have to continue to work hard and stay healthy.”
Leading the way for the Quakers was senior Sara Bohall (Westport, IN/Columbus East) and first-year Rachel Dana (Columbus, IN/North) who combined to win the 55-meter hurdles relay. Bohall posted the best time winning in 8.9 seconds. Dana posted a time of 9.83.
Senior Emma Abernathy (Atlanta, GA/Lakeside) set a school record in the pole vault relay with a height of 9’0¼” to combine with junior Allison Blaetz’s (Palantine, IL/William Fremd) effort of 8’0½” to finish in a tie for second.
In the 5,000-meter run relay the Quakers were fourth with junior Mary Rowley (Evanston, IL/North Shore Country Day) running a 21:58.48 and junior Laura Nitti (Portland, OR/Lincoln) finishing in 22:41.81. First-year Cristyn Wenn (Fairmount, IN/Madison-Grant) was the only competitor for the Quakers in the high jump relay. She cleared 4’7” to take fourth.
The sprint medley relay team of first-year Ramona Hemmings (Cleveland, OH/Shaw), Dana, Bohall and sophomore Eirinn Cooper (Franklin, IN/International) was fifth with a time of 4:41.44. Hemmings also was a solo effort in the long jump relay with a distance of 12’0½” to take fifth.
Earlham was sixth in the 1,600-meter relay. Senior Brittany Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL/Paideia, GA), senior Rebecca Tolmach (Atlanta, GA/Henry W. Grady), senior Megan Carter (Lewis, IN/Terre Haute South Vigo) and junior Michelle Crane (Mansfield, OH/St. Peter’s) completed their event in 11:02.92.
The Quakers also had a sixth place finish in the distance medley relay. Senior Anna Chatfield (Doylestown, OH/Chippewa), first-year Alison McEmber (Newtown, CT/Newtown), Cooper and Crane posted a time of 13:50.29.
In the shot put relay, the team of junior Kathleen Parker (Stamford, CT/Northfield Mt. Herman) and first-year Melissa Barnes (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Montego Bay) finished sixth. Parker had a throw of 32’2½” with Barnes adding a 28’10½” toss.
Earlham competes at the Anderson Invitational next Saturday, Feb 9. The meet gets underway at 3 p.m.— EC —
