Quakers post come-from-behind victory
September 2, 2005
RICHMOND, Ind. — A big comeback
by the Earlham College volleyball team on Friday night had the
players smiling
after
a victory
over
Rose-Hulman
in the Coca-Cola Quaker Classic on Schuckman Court in the Athletics
and Wellness Center.
The Quakers (1-1) defeated the Engineers 18-30,
26-30, 30-22, 30-21, 15-6, after falling to Wilmington 30-19,
24-30, 30-26, 30-27
earlier in the day. “The biggest difference was that we kept
telling them to trust our defense and the offense would come,” Earlham
head coach Natalie Alred said. “They never quit. They work
their tails off no matter what happens.”
Earlham’s lineup varied from the preseason scrimmages, which
caused some difficulty in the opening contest against Wilmington. “It
took a match to get used to it,” Alred said. “We were
just too inconsistent.”
But that changed as the Quakers battled with
Rose-Hulman. “We’re
playing smarter and digging a lot of balls and we were able to
run all three of our defenses,” Alred said. “Another
key was that when someone was struggling, we were able to pick
them up and we didn’t do that last year.”
Earlham opens play Saturday against Marian College,
which won both of its matches in Pool A on Friday. The Knights
defeated Wilmington
30-25, 30-15, 30-21 and then beat Rose-Hulman 30-14, 30-22, 30-23.
The match begins at 11 a.m. with the final round pairings to be
determined by the standings in each pool. The final round starts
at 1:30 p.m. and the championship and consolation matches are at
3:30 p.m.
Here are the results for Pool B: Urbana def. DePauw,
16-30, 30-28, 30-27, 30-28; Transylvania def. Taylor-Ft. Wayne
30-23, 30-25,
30-32, 30-26; Urbana def. Taylor-Ft. Wayne 30-23, 30-13, 30-23;
DePauw def. Transylvania 30-25, 30-28, 30-26.
