Two Wins Give Quakers Share of Title and 4-0 Start

For Immediate Release
Sept. 2, 2006

RICHMOND, Ind. — Two more victories by the Earlham volleyball team on Saturday gave the Quakers a share of the championship of the Coca-Cola Quaker Classic with Urbana University.

The Quakers started the day with a 30-28, 35-33, 30-24 win over Frostburg State on Schuckman Court. Earlham defeated Taylor-Ft. Wayne 30-25, 31-29, 30-23.

The Quakers now own a 12-game winning streak after dropping the opening game in the first match of the tourney.“To go 4-0 and be co-champs in the tournament is well deserved,” Earlham Head Coach Natalie Alred said. “They’ve worked hard for it and it’s a good feeling. They’ve worked so hard and stuck together and they’ve learned the lessons. You have to believe in yourself to get wins."

Most of the games in each match were close and the Quakers fell behind several times before coming back to win. “Those are games where you could roll over and in the past we have,” Alred said of the latest winning string. “That’s a pretty good feat against some quality teams.”

A measure of the team’s success came in the final victory over Taylor-Ft. Wayne. The Quakers have played the Lady Falcons three times since Alred arrived in Richmond in 2004. That year, Earlham lost twice in four games. Last season, the Quakers won in five games. “To beat them in three is a testament of how far we’ve come,” Alred said.

First-year Keeley McAnnis-Entenman was named to the all-tournament team.

In the opening match Saturday, junior Lisa Vanderkolk led the Quakers with 15 kills, 12 digs and four blocks, while junior Amanda Prewitt had 19 assists.

Against Taylor-Ft. Wayne, Vanderkolk led the way with 11 kills, while senior Ashley Govro had 22 assists. McAnnis-Entenman had six aces. Sophomore Katie Evans had 25 digs.

The Quakers compete in the Rose-Hulman Tournament next Friday and Saturday.
