Quakers Post Two More Victories

For Immediate Release
Sept. 9, 2006

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Earlham College volleyball team ended the Rose-Hulman Tournament on Saturday with a pair of victories.

The Quakers opened the day with a 30-23, 30-25, 30-19 win over Manchester College before defeating Wilmington College 30-24, 29-31, 30-9, 30-23.

Earlham is 7-1 and has put together the best start since the Quakers were 10-0 in 1989. “It’s a huge accomplishment and we’re proud of it, but we still have a long way to go to compete in the North Coast Athletic Conference,” Earlham coach Natalie Alred said. “We played some decent teams this weekend so it was nice to see us step up in certain areas. We know that we could have been 8-0. We were up 2-1 against Centre on Friday and ahead in game four and for some reason didn’t finish the match off.”

On Saturday however, that defeat didn’t bother the Quakers. “The loss disappointing, but to see how we bounced back was really exciting,” Alred said. “We played really tough. On Friday, they were almost trying too hard to keep the winning streak going.”

Although Alred was pleased with effort during the entire tournament, she was really smiling after the final match. “Wilmington is a very scrappy team and we played each point as if it were the most important point,” she said. “That’s something we’re trying to emphasize.”

Junior Lisa Vanderkolk (Bluffton, IN/Bluffton) led the Quakers with 13 kills and three blocks against Manchester, while first-year Keeley McAnnis-Entenman (Portland, OR/Grant) had nine kills. Sophomore Kathryn Evans (Milton, IN/Muncie Burris) had 19 digs. Senior Ashley Govro (Greensburg, IN/North Decatur) added 17 assists and junior Amanda Prewitt (Greenwood, IN/Greenwood) had 13 assists.

Against Wilmington, Vanderkolk had 18 kills, while McAnnis-Entenman had eight kills and junior Jessica Whitaker (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) added seven kills. Evans had 22 digs. Prewitt led the way with 26 assists and Govro had 20 assists.

Earlham plays at Denison University on Tuesday. The NCAC match begins at 7 p.m. “Going into conference play, it’s a good feeling to have a great start,” Alred said. “It’s going to be tough.” Manchester Box Score. Wilmington Box Score.
