For Immediate Release:
Oct. 24, 2007
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Earlham College volleyball team faced top-ranked Wittenberg University on Wednesday night in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest.
The Quakers managed to take a game from the unbeaten Tigers in the 30-16, 28-30, 30-24, 30-19 decision. The significance of Earlham winning a game was that it ended Wittenberg’s string of 54 straight, which is three shy of the NCAA Div. III national record of 57 established by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh earlier this season.
The last time Wittenberg (30-0, 13-0) dropped a game in a match was in a 3-2 win over Hope College on Sept. 14. The Tigers had won 17 consecutive contests by a 3-0 score. Earlham is one of four teams to win a game in a match this season against Wittenberg, which is the only team in Div. III without a loss.
Earlham (11-15, 5-8) falls into fifth place in the NCAC standings a half game behind fourth place Denison University (11-12, 5-7), which plays Wittenberg on Friday and third place College of Wooster (14-13, 9-4) on Saturday.
Ohio Wesleyan University lost on Wednesday (11-15, 4-8) and is in sixth place. The top four teams advance to the NCAC Tournament.
Against Wittenberg, senior Lisa Vanderkolk (Bluffton, IN/Bluffton) led the Quakers with 15 kills with classmate Jessica Whitaker (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) adding 14 kills.
Senior Amanda Prewitt (Greenwood, IN/Greenwood) led the Quakers with 36 assists, while senior Kaitlin Gentry (Kent, OH/Roosevelt) topped the squad with 27 digs. Prewitt added 23 digs.
The Quakers entertain Ohio Wesleyan on Friday. The NCAC contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center is at 7 p.m. Box score.
