Quakers Qualify for NCAC Tournament;
Seniors Lead Way to Win Over Bluffton
For Immediate Release:
Oct. 27, 2007
RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College volleyball team made history on Saturday, but it did have anything to do with a victory on the court as the Quakers qualified for the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament for the first time since the event became a four-team affair in 2004.
After Earlham defeated Bluffton University 30-12, 31-29, 30-24 in a non-conference match on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center, the Quakers found out that the College of Wooster beat Denison. That result meant that the Quakers finished fourth in the conference regular season standings and qualified for the NCAC Tournament.
The Quakers (13-15) are the No. 4 seed and face top seed Wittenberg University (32-0), which is ranked No. 1 in the nation. The match is Friday in Springfield, Ohio, at 5:30 p.m.
No. 2 seed Hiram College (26-4) meets No. 3 College of Wooster (15-13) in the other opening round contest at Wittenberg at 8 p.m. The Championship match is Saturday at 2 p.m.
Earlham’s last appearance in the NCAC Tournament was in 2002 when it was an 8-team bracket. The Quakers best finish under that format was third in 1990.
A Victory on Senior Day
Sophomore Keeley McAnnis-Entenman (Portland, OR/Grant) led the Quakers with 12 kills in 14 attempts, while setting a school record with an 85.7 hitting percentage in the match.
Seniors Lisa Vanderkolk (Bluffton, IN/Bluffton) and Sara Prince (Dresden, OH/Tri-Valley) had nine kills each.
Senior Jessica Whitaker (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) topped the Quakers with 27 digs, while classmate Amanda Prewitt (Greenwood, IN/Greenwood) led the Quakers with 34 assists.
In addition to Vanderkolk, Prince, Whitaker and Prewitt, seniors Kaitlin Gentry (Kent, OH/Roosevelt) and Kari Schneider (Cincinnati, OH/Mt. Notre Dame) played their final matches at home. “This group of seniors has been the foundation for us to be able to turn around our volleyball program,” Earlham Head Coach Natalie Alred said. “The have worked hard to become on of the best teams in the NCAC. Most of all they have been great role models for all of the younger players and they will truly be missed.” Box score.
