SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The season came to an end for the Earlham College volleyball team on Friday night with an opening round 30-21, 30-19, 30-20 loss to top-ranked Wittenberg University in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

This was the first appearance for the No. 4 seed Quakers (13-16) in the conference event since the four-team format began in 2004. “We played really hard,” Earlham Head Coach Natalie Alred said. “I’m extremely proud of this group. They’ve done a lot of things that haven’t been done at Earlham for awhile.”

Earlham, which was one six teams to win a game against the Tigers (33-0) during the regular season, never led in the first contest against the tourney’s No. 1 seed.

In the second game, the Quakers were tied 9-9 before falling in that contest. Earlham did lead 10-9 in the final game of the match before the Wittenberg went on an 8-3 run to take control.

Senior Lisa Vanderkolk (Bluffton, IN/Bluffton) led the Quakers with nine kills and 14 digs, while classmate Jessica Whitaker (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) added seven kills as the duo played the final match of their careers.

Senior Amanda Prewitt (Greenwood, IN/Greenwood) led the Quakers with 16 assists.

In addition to Vanderkolk, Whitaker and Prewitt, seniors Kaitlin Gentry (Kent, OH/Roosevelt), Sara Prince (Dresden, OH/Tri-Valley) and Kari Schneider (Cincinnati, OH/Mt. Notre Dame) finished their careers with Earlham.

Vanderkolk, Whitaker and Prewitt are among the all-time leaders in Earlham history in kills, digs and assists. Whitaker is third best with 1,207 kills, while Vanderkolk is fourth with 1,079 kills.

In digs, Whitaker finishes with 1,542, which is second all-time. Vanderkolk is fourth on the list with 1,064 digs. Prewitt is third in assists with 1,999 in her career.

Whitaker established a pair of individual records with 1,190 attack attempts in a season and 4,181 in her career. Prewitt set a new mark in assist average per game with 9.46.
