OSHKOSH, Wis. — Earlham College track enjoyed its best day on a national stage since it began competing under the NCAA banner nearly two decades ago. A pair of Quakers had outstanding performances on the first day of competition at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday.

Sophomore Chris Shaw (Anderson, IN/Pendleton Heights) became the second Quaker to earn National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III All-American honors in men's track, while senior Sara Bohall (Westport, IN/Columbus East) furthered her chances to become Earlham's first NCAA Division III All-American in women's track.

Shaw had a throw of 164'9" to finish fifth in the discus. "Chris threw very well and improved in the finals," Earlham Head Track Coach Nick Johnson said. The three-day national meet is being held on J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

The top-eight finishers in an event earn a place on the All-America Team. Shaw advanced to the finals with a toss of 163'2" in the preliminaries, which was the sixth-best effort. Dan Hytinen of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater won the event with a throw of 194'11".

Walker Yane was the first NCAA Division III All-American in men's track for the Quakers with an eighth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 2007. "We're tickled to have an All-American for the second year in a row," Johnson said.

Bohall posted an Earlham-record time of 61.77 seconds during the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles, which was good enough for a second-place finish in the first heat. "Sara ran an excellent race," Earlham Assistant Track Coach Pat Thomas said. "We think that she could be quicker in the finals."

The three heat winners and the next six-fastest times qualified for the finals in the event to be held on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. (CDT). Bohall's effort was the sixth-fastest overall, and she will run in lane eight in the finals. Sumer Rohrs of Frostburg State (Md.) had the best time of 60.34 seconds.
