What is an internship?

intern at art museum

An internship is an experiential, real-world learning opportunity where students learn by doing. Internships provide your student with the opportunity to gain understanding of a work place, the culture, expectations and experience needed for a particular job or career field. They offer insights as your student explores the big questions of life.

Read about other students' experiences, or look at a map of where Earlham students have interned recently.

Why should my child do an internship?

An internship is critical for your student in order to have relevant experience in a competitive job market. Internships help students explore the career fields they are thinking they may like and have skills. Entry-level jobs now require more than entry-level skills and internships are a key way for students to gain a competitive edge. Many employers hire their former interns or give them preference in the hiring process.

What can I do to help my student?

Encourage your student to visit the Bonner Center for Service and Vocation and work with us in assessing their skills, interests, and abilities. We can help students see options and opportunities they may not have been exposed to before. Additionally, the article "A Career Planning Course for Parents" can give you insight on helping your student each year of their college career.

What can I do to help other Earlham students?

At the BCSV, we're always looking for more opportunities for our students. Do you know of any internships at your company or organization? Tell us using our Internship Opportunity Form. You can also contact us by e-mail or phone.
