A Celebration of and Tribute to
William Harvey's 32 Year Career
in Biology at Earlham College
    1972-2004

Introduction

Dr. William Harvey - 2004
They broke the mold! They just aren't making college professors like Bill Harvey any more. By contemporary standards, the breadth of his training and expertise are truly amazing. Bill's undergraduate majors were in biology and chemistry; his master's work focused on botany and microbiology; and his PhD thesis research centered on plant developmental biology. While teaching at Earlham he scoured the literature and became a regional leader in explaining the medical biology of HIV infection and AIDS awareness. He mastered the complex field of human immunology and developed an exciting and often taught course in that complex and rapidly changing discipline. In his "mature" years, Bill initiated a new program in cancer research that has involved dozens of Earlham undergraduates and resulted in numerous publications. During much of his career, Bill was Earlham's Health Services Advisor, and he developed an international reputation for his skill and knowledge in this field. Bill and Mary Nic also found time to lead highly successful off-campus programs in Eastern Europe, England, the Galapagos Islands, and at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It will be impossible to replace the scope of Bill's contributions with one person - we'll probably need at least a half-dozen.

Teaching at Earlham

On his resumé Bill modestly lists molecular genetics, microbiology - immunology, and cell biology as his teaching areas. However, Bill Harvey's biological versitility is extraordinary, and it is combined with depth in a suprising number of diverse areas. This can be well demonstrated by listing courses that he has taught during his career at Earlham: General Biology I and II, Ecological Biology, Genes and Inheritance, Plants and Human Affairs, Cell Biology, Plant Physiology, Plant Kingdom, Plant Structure and Function, Microbiology, Cell Physiology, Molecular Genetics, Molecular Technology, Energy in Cells, and Immunology - plus seminar courses in Advanced Topics in Microbiology, Darwin's England, Immunology, Oncogenes and Immunology, Immunology and Genetics of Cancer, The Biology of Immunne Systems, Cancer Biology, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Immunology and Virology - plus numerous Independent Studies.

Bill is regarded as a forceful, animated, and very effective classroom lecturer. He is always thoroughly prepared and demonstrates mastery of the subject matter, although the high density of subject matter is leavened with frequent touches of humor. His enthusiasm for all aspects of biology and overall geniality are infectuous. S Professor Harvey at the Podium
Professor Harvey and Students in the Microbiology Lab S The laboratory sessions of Bill's courses are exceptionally well organized. They stress the mastery of important lab techniques and the roles that they play in learning about living processes. Students learn by doing, by reasoning through problems, and by undertaking manageable research projects.
Like other Earlham Biology professors, Bill Harvey incorporates intensive literature searches and/or research oriented laboratory projects in most of his courses. They then gain experience in organizing and presenting the results of their investigations to others. Course Poster Session S

Throughout his career Bill served as academic advisor to hundreds of Earlham students. He worked in the first year advising program as well as overseeing the curricular planning of a great many majors in the fields of Biology and Biochemistry. S Professor Harvey Talking With Student S In addition, Bill was the Health Services Advisor and the Convenor of that committee. In this capacity, he helped additional hundreds of Earlhamites plan and prepare for careers in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, and other health related fields.

Research Activities

Bill Harvey's current research program is the product of the effective planning and use of sabbatical leaves and domestic off-campus study opportunities to acquire new research skills. He learned tissue culture and virology during two extended periods at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His expertise in developing and using the hairy cell leukemia cell line to study cancer occurred in Dr. Milton Taylor's laboratory at Indiana University. As a result of these experiences, he was able to establish his modern molecular biology laboratory and successful student-faculty research program at Earlham.

Bill lists his research interests as involving the following areas: characterization and etiology of hairy cell leukemia; trasfection of retroviruses - processing of proviral DNA; plant and animal organs tissue and cell culture; and molecular probes. In the photo at the right, Professor Harvey is congradulating graduating seniors Omar Harb (`93) and Steve Kosak (`93), who worked with him on the leukemia research program. Service to Earlham College

During his career at Earlham, Bill has served the college in many positions of responsibility: Convenor, Natural Science Division, 1992-1996; Convenor, Biology Department, 1996-1999; Director, Earlham-HHMI Program, 1991-1999; Associate Director, Earlham-HHMI Program, 1988-1991; Chairman, GLCA Scotland Advisory Committee, 1986-present; Chief Health Services Advisor and Convenor of that committee; 1973-present; and Faculty Director, ACM/GLCA Oak Ridge Science Semester, 1979-1980 and Fall 1993.

Like most Earlham faculty, Bill Harvey has led several off-campus study groups. He and Mary Nic have led extremely successful groups to Eastern Europe and to England (twice). Bill has also co-led two groups to the Galapagos Islands and has been Director of the GLCA-ACM Oak Ridge Science Semester at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
In 1978, Bill and Mary Nic Harvey teamed with their good friends Phil and Barbara Norman as co-leaders of the Earlham College foreign study group to Eastern Europe. They visited 11 countries during the 10 weeks of peripatetic learning. S

Community, National, and International Activities

In the city of Richmond, Bill has served on the board of directors of several local organizations: Richmond Civic Theatre, Richmond Symphony Orchestra, Whitewater Opera Company, United Way, Aids Task Force, WMCA, and the ALCOA Scholarship Program. He also served on the Advisory Board of the Richmond Community Schools and the Institutional Review Board of Reid Hospital. He and Mary Nic have also been active in local social organizations and activities. Bill's work in AIDS education has been particularly significant to the regional community. He has made presentations to and held discussions with many educational, civic, and religious groups in Eastern Indiana.

Bill Harvey has maintained long term memberships in several scientific societies and associations. He has served as a committee member of the Educational Division of the American Society of Microbiologists and on the Minority Advisory Committee of the American Association of Medical Schools. Bill has been particularly active in the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP). The NAAHP coordinates the activities of its four independent regional associations. Bill's involvements have been mostly with the Central AAHP, of which he is currently President. Bill is also currently on the board of directors of the National AAHP.

International and domestic consulting in the field of medical and health sciences education has also occupied a part of Bill's attention in recent years. Internationally, he has worked with the Karol Marcinkowski School of Medicine, Poznan, Poland; American University of the Caribbean, San Maarten, St. Georges' School of Medicine, Grenada; Autonomous University of Guadalajara, Mexico; and the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. In this country, Bill has consulted with DePauw Universitiy and Ohio Wesleyan University about pre-health professional and biological education.

Plans for the Future

As a trial run for retirement, Bill and Mary Nic Harvey, with their good friends and frequent traveling companions Phil and Barb Norman, flew over to England in December of 2003 and took the last trans-Atlantic voyage to America of the Queen Elizabeth II before it is replaced by the new Queen Mary II.

For the next academic year, Bill will continue, on a part time basis, with his Health Services Advising responsibilities at Earlham. He also plans to continue with some of his consulting activities in Health Sciences Education and already has a visitation scheduled to a medical school in Poznan, Poland for April of this year. Retirement will also enable the couple to make more frequent visits to see their son, Brian, who lives in the Los Angeles area and works at Touchstone Television as their Manager of Drama. They also plan to expend some efforts on modest renovations to their lovely home at the end of the lane off Toshlog Road overlooking their pond with the year-round resident Baldwin great blue heron. The Harveys will also begin to increase their travel experiences, both in the United States and abroad. In late December of 2004 and January of the next year, Bill and Mary Nic will coordinate a trip for a small group of friends to the Galapagos Islands, followed by an excursion to the Incan ruins Machu Picchu in Peru.

In 2001, Mary Nic Harvey preceded Bill in retirement, leaving her position of 18 years as the librarian at Westview Elementary School in Richmond. Last year, in anticipation of an increase in domestic travel, Mary Nic and Bill purchased a mobile travel home.
Among other advantages, this RV will enable them to include their Scottish Terrier, Mac, in their travel plans. They are looking forward to much anticipated tours, with their "dinghy" in tow and Mac aboard, through the upper peninsula of Michigan and the Southwestern US, as well as other regions of our nation.

During their tenure at Earlham, the Harveys have enjoyed the companionship of five successive Scotties: Pooh, Mick, Holly, Bailey, and Mac. Many former bio majors and other students were delighted with these people friendly pooches, whom they encountered during the dogs' frequent visits to the EC campus.
