They broke the mold! They just aren't making college professors like Bill Harvey any more. By contemporary standards, the breadth of his training and expertise are truly amazing. Bill's undergraduate majors were in biology and chemistry; his master's work focused on botany and microbiology; and his PhD thesis research centered on plant developmental biology. While teaching at Earlham he scoured the literature and became a regional leader in explaining the medical biology of HIV infection and AIDS awareness. He mastered the complex field of human immunology and developed an exciting and often taught course in that complex and rapidly changing discipline. In his "mature" years, Bill initiated a new program in cancer research that has involved dozens of Earlham undergraduates and resulted in numerous publications. During much of his career, Bill was Earlham's Health Services Advisor, and he developed an international reputation for his skill and knowledge in this field. Bill and Mary Nic also found time to lead highly successful off-campus programs in Eastern Europe, England, the Galapagos Islands, and at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It will be impossible to replace the scope of Bill's contributions with one person - we'll probably need at least a half-dozen.
