For Biology
Students
Curriculum
The
Biology Department encourages potential biology majors to start
planning in the fall term of their first year. This will enable
you to create a four-year program that includes time for off-campus
study, for pre-professional or graduate school preparation, or
readying yourself for employment in a biology-related field upon
graduation.
Research
 |
The
Biology Department believes that a critical aspect of learning
science is learning how science is done. We encourage our students
to engage in research in the classroom, in the laboratory, and
in the field |

Getting
Involved Through Work
- Being
a TA (Teaching Assistant)
The department recruits students to assist in the laboratory
and field components of Earlham courses. This is a valuable
opportunity for upper level students to improve their own knowledge
of biology and to help other students learn it. Talk with professors
or watch the department bulletin board for openings.
- Working
in the Biology Stockroom
Students are also needed to work in the Biology Stockroom. Contact
Melissa Foster, the Stockroom Supervisor, for openings.
- Working
in the Greenhouse
The department maintains a greenhouse and students are needed
to care for plants during the academic year and in the summer.
Contact Brent Smith for openings.
Preparing
for Careers
Biology
students can find information on summer jobs, internships, and
employment after college through conversations with Biology Department
faculty and by consulting with the staff of the Earlham College
Career Development Center. Career Development maintains extensive
files of information to help with job searches.
Preparing
for Graduate School
Undergraduate and Post-graduate Scholarships
The department encourages biology students to apply
for scholarships that will support travel, study or research after
graduation. The application process begins junior year for scholarships
after graduation.
Honors,
Awards and Scholarships
Earlham
College recognizes the achievements of its students through a
variety of honors, awards, and scholarships. Earlham biology students
also distinguish themselves by earning nationally recognized awards.
