Bonner Scholar Offers Early Teaching Opportunity

Meg Duff '11
Bonner Summer of Service: Breakthrough Sacramento

Duff -megAfter her sophomore year, Meg began teaching cell biology to middle schoolers through Breakthrough Sacramento, a college-prep program for students in under-resourced middle schools. The kids learned about science, and Meg learned what it’s like to teach full-time.

Meg returned to Breakthrough the next year, as the head of the science department. In addition to planning lessons, teaching and attending field trips, Meg facilitated department meetings and supported the other science teachers.

“Being a Breakthrough teacher has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life,” says Meg, an HDSR major and Bonner Scholar. “I’ve taken on more than I thought I could ever take on, and done well with it. That makes me more confident about what I can do in other situations.”
