Integrated Program in Health Sciences

This program is targeted toward students interested in pursuing a career in health science fields. Students can major in any academic discipline, from art to psychology, so long as they take the basic science classes needed for their chosen health career goal.  This program will serve all Health Professions' interests including medical, dental, veterinary, physical therapy, nursing, physician's assistantship, pharmacy, optometry, and public health.

Earlham’s Integrated Program in Heath Sciences is designed to help students build tangible knowledge, non-cognitive skills, and cultural competence that will accelerate their development as a future health professional. The program is built around a learning-by-doing approach, giving them a diverse suite of competencies, skills, and experiences to give them a distinctive edge when applying for the most selective health professions programs and health career opportunities.

Earlham provides exceptionally good preparation for students who are planning to attend medical, dental, veterinarian, or other graduate programs in the health sciences. We have adopted a cutting-edge e-portfolio/advising system called AdviseStream for pre-health students, and our programs in the sciences are exceptional. The Program Director, Michael Deibel, Ph.D. is a member of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of that organization.  Together with the other members of the Health Career Advisory Committee - William Harvey, Ph.D. and Peter Blair, Ph.D. — they bring more than 60 years of experience in helping students prepare for health professions programs.

Special Learning Opportunities

Many Earlham science courses include independent research projects as part of their laboratory requirements.

Students have many opportunities to participate in collaborative student-faculty research in health science-related fields. Summer research intensives give students the latest lab skills, analytical tools, and experience with instrumentation as well as close mentoring with faculty.

Our “Indiana Pathways” grants fund internships for pre-health students at the Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health and the Wells Center Summer Research Program.

Our program facilitates externships at local health facilities such as Reid Hospital.

Our new Biology and Chemistry building has a dedicated cadaver lab for Anatomy and Physiology.

We have a newly designed Psych 116 - Behavior, Health Care and Society- Psychology for the Health Professions course to help students prepare for the 2015 Medical College Admission Test.

Many students interested in health sciences take part in off-campus study opportunities including Earlham's programs in Tanzania and New Zealand as well as programs at the Philadelphia Center and at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Outcomes

Our notable alumni include one of the first proponents of emergency medicine, leaders in drug discovery and physicians in every specialty.

Students have landed summer research positions in labs at Harvard and Northwestern medical schools and participated in field research in such far-flung places as the Bahamas, the Galapagos Islands, and Iceland.

In addition to our excellent rates of medical school admission, Earlham ranks 10th in the country for the percentage of our graduates who earn doctorates in the life sciences.
