May Term in Greece Program

May Term In Greece 2004

Every two years, Earlham offers a May Term in Greece. Above, the 2004 participants are pictured in front of the Temple of Aphaia at Aegina.

Description

The May Term in Greece Program provides an intensive cultural tour through Greece. Our goal is for students on the program to experience first-hand the wonders of Greece through the ages. Our journeys typically take us to some of the most important and impressive sites and monuments in Greece, including the ruins of ancient cities and sanctuaries, Byzantine monasteries and churches, Ottoman, Frankish, and Venetian fortresses, and, of course, many of the cultural centers of modern Greece. As we study the physical remains of Greece's past, we learn about the diverse cultures that have combined to give Greece its unique place in human history.

Leaders

May Term in Greece is traditionally led by the members of the Department of Classics. Often our leaders also include faculty members from other departments. The leaders for the 2006 May Term in Greece are:

  • Susan Wise, Assistant Professor of Classics. Susan is a Classical archaeologist who is familiar with the archaeological remains and culture of ancient Greece. She has excavated archaeological sites in Greece and Turkey, including the Athenian Agora and the site of Troy.

  • Steve Heiny, Professor of Classics. Steve is a Classicist with a broad knowledge of ancient Greek culture, history, language, and literature. He has traveled widely throughout Greece and has led the May Term in Greece Program many times.

  • Mickey White, Professor of Theater. Mickey has extensively studied ancient Greek theater and theatrical performances. He has led the May Term in Greece Program several times

Itinerary

After a brief orientation at the Athens Center in Athens, our group spends the majority of our time traveling from one location to another in order to experience and study a wide range of Greek geography and cultural history. For the 2006 May Term, which will run from May 14 to June 8, our itinerary will include Athens, Eleusis, Corinth, Mycenae, Nauplion, Epidauros, Mistra, Nemea, Pylos, Olympia, Delphi, Meteora, Mykonos, Delos and Paros.
