1 Introduction
Information as you prepare
for Fall 2009:
Check-in takes place in the Atrium of the Landrum
Bolling Center.
New Student Orientation (NSO). The
Student and Faculty Co-Conveners are eager to greet you on the main
drive as you arrive
on campus. The five-day NSO should provide a solid foundation for
your Earlham experience — a foundation based on support, scholarship,
fun, dialogue and community values. Be sure to review the NSO
schedule and to consult Highlights
of NSO 2009 for
a more in-depth description of some of the week's activities.
Presidential
Welcome. President
Doug Bennett extends an online greeting to you as you begin your
college career, and he'll greet you in person during New Student
Orientation. In Earlham fashion, you'll come to know the president
as "Doug," during
interactions related to community governance, discussions of current
issues, convocations, college policies, and films (his passion).
You may even take one of his Politics courses. At Earlham, the President's
Office door is always open to students and parents.
Peer
Mentoring Program. In early August, your Peer Mentor will
be in touch with you via your Earlham e-mail. Read about the 2009-2010
Peer Mentors before meeting your Mentor on Tuesday, August 25,
during New Student Orientation.
Arrival on Campus. On Friday, August
21, you'll
finally meet the Earlham New Student Orientation Committee in person.
Please plan to arrive between 8 a.m. and noon. If you'd like
a better idea of what you'll do that day, see What
to Expect Upon Arriving at Earlham. Remember a shuttle
service is available for those arriving at area airports;
your Arrival
Form should be submitted by July 17.
The Registrar's
Office is preparing for your arrival. They have
shared information with your academic adviser, asked the Post
Office to assign a post office box for your "official Earlham
mailing address" and are making final additions to the
2009-10 Academic
Calendar and Course Schedule. Please plan to visit
the Registrar's Office Open House with your parents from
10 a.m. to noon on Friday, August 21.
Building Your Academic Career. During
Registration, you'll select the remaining courses for the Fall
Semester that also capture your interests and encourage you to define
new ones. Try to become familiar with the academic terminology of
the College through the Glossary
of Academic Terms and understand more
about registration fees by reading the Essential
Academic Information before you arrive. Take
another tour through the academic Web pages to discover the breadth
of the curricular options that await you.
Plan to attend the "Building an Academic Career" session
on Saturday, August 22, at 9:15 a.m. to learn more about the expectations
for an Earlham degree.
Quantitative Skills Assessment. Given
to all first-year students during New Student Enrollment Confirmation
on Tuesday, August 25, this assessment is part of a new program
Earlham is developing as the College continues to build a stronger
community of teachers and learners. The Quantitative Skills Assessment
will help different curricular planning units on campus understand
the level and needs of Earlham students as the College works to
strengthen its offerings.
The assessment is a basic survey of high school
level arithmetic, algebraic and geometric skills. The skills you
will be tested on may include estimation, calculating percentages,
solving equations for one and two unknowns, and the basics of graphing
and table interpretation. Any formula you must have to answer
the questions will be provided.
You will not be permitted to use calculators while taking this
assessment.
Parents Asking Questions? If your parents
are looking for online information regarding the beginning of
your Earlham experience, direct them to the Welcome
