Glossary of Academic Terms
Course Load: All students are considered
as full-time and will be charged as such unless they have the Registrar's
approval for part-time status. At the close of the Registration/Schedule
Change period — Tuesday, September 1 for Fall Semester 2009 and
Tuesday, January 19 for Spring Semester 2010 — the
Registrar's
Office processes registrations and schedule changes. At the conclusion
of this process, students registered for more than
18 credits will be billed an overload charge
of $957.00 for each credit over 18. Music lessons, for which
an additional fee of $390.00 is billed, are not considered a part
of credits over 18. A student must be enrolled for a minimum
of
12 credits during a semester to be
considered full time. Students are informed of full-time status as
a part of the Enrollment Confirmation process.
Enrollment Confirmation: To confirm their
enrollment and presence at Earlham, students 'check
in' on
the day preceding the first day of class of each semester. At tables
in the Landrum Bolling Center's Richmond Room, the Registrar's
Office distributes registration information and confirms each students';
enrollment for the semester. Before students are permitted to confirm
enrollment, accounts must be cleared by the published
deadline or appropriate arrangements need to be made with Earlham's
Accounting Office. Both the Accounting and Financial Aid offices
are located in Carpenter Hall. Students are required to
confirm their enrollment within 48 hours of the
close of Enrollment Confirmation Day. Students risk being
automatically dropped from all registered classes and place
their financial
aid in jeopardy if they do not comply.
The Registrar's Office cannot verify the enrollment of any student
who has not confirmed his/her enrollment. Enrollment Confirmation
dates are: Fall, Tuesday, August 25, 2009 and Spring, Monday, January
11, 2010. Students will be asked to show their student I.D.
at Enrollment Confirmation in compliance with the FERPA Act.
Full-Time Status: A student must be enrolled for a minimum
of 12 credits during a semester to be considered full time. There
can be no exceptions to this policy.
Registration: The process of officially signing up for a
semester's coursework. During each semester a pre-registration period
is defined. During this time, students work with their academic advisers
and the Registrar's Office to plan their schedules for the upcoming
semester.
Self-Service. Students register
for classes through Self-Service, available at theheart (Earlham's
portal) online. Academic advisers work with students to assist
in decision-making about the courses to be taken. Each semester,
students are notified via e-mail of the three-week registration
period and policies associated with registration.
