Countdown 3 Introduction

Action Steps for you to complete:

Welcome to Earlham!
  1. All new students should complete and submit the Interpretive Practice and Earlham Seminar Request Form by July 7. On the form you will indicate four choices for each type of course. By the time you arrive on campus and meet with your academic adviser, you will have been assigned to an Earlham Seminar or Interpretive Practices course for the Fall semester.
  2. Complete and submit your Media Information Form indicating the names and contact information for two newspapers where Earlham's public Affairs Office may send hometown releases about you, to Public Affairs by July 17.

Information as you prepare for Fall 2009:

Community at Earlham. Earlham is a place where ideas, values and personal and political commitments matter. It's a place where respectful discussion, debate and truth- and consensus-seeking occur both in and outside the classroom. To learn more about how the College community approaches our life together, we encourage you to become familiar with Principles and Practices and the College Policies before you arrive on campus.

General Education. In your First-Year Courses and throughout your career here, you'll be challenged to think critically in your studies about the impact of your choices and actions and about ways to bring change you would like to see in the world. Earlham Seminars offer unique opportunities to become part of the Earlham educational community. Interpretive Practices Courses build basic skills in reading, writing, interpretation and classroom discussion.

Language Placement. Finding your appropriate language-course level is very important and before classes begin each fall, the Department of Languages and Literatures works with new students to help them register. This is the only time that placement takes place, and all students who have studied one of the languages offered at Earlham (with the exception of some international students) must participate in the process.

Computing Services. You will want to consider what computing resources are available to you at Earlham and decide whether or not to bring along your own computer. Visit the Computing Services site to learn about what to do to get connected.

Media Information. While you're at Earlham, our Public Affairs Office will want to share news of your successes with your hometown newspapers. To do that we'll need your help in providing the information by submitting the Media Information Form. As Public Affairs' work with the media is guided by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Each year more than 6,000 news releases are distributed to newspapers throughout the United States, making many parents proud and building name recognition for Earlham.

New Student Orientation (NSO) begins on Friday, August 21 and continues through Tuesday, August 25.

Other Information Mailed to You. By now you should have received your Academic and Residential Planner in the mail. This packet included a Heath Record Form (pdf), an Advising Questionnaire (pdf), a Housing Questionnaire (pdf) and a Disability Disclosure Form (pdf). If you need another copy of these forms, download the pdf document. Follow the instructions to submit each of these to the appropriate office by the deadline provided.

Bookstore Online. Looking for your first Earlham t-shirt and hat? At www.earlhambookstore.com, you can purchase supplies and College apparel before arriving on campus. Located in Runyan Center, the Bookstore carries textbooks for every class at Earlham, and so much more.
